Current Conditions:Ever wonder how your neighbor always has the perfect yard and never see them working in it. We want to help you spend less time working in your yard and more time enjoying it. Using the following information will help.
Sod Installation:
The first thing you need to do is to measure your yard to determine the amount of sod needed. Always order enough sod for the job or you will regret it later. When the sod arrives you need to have the soil preparation complete, this means all weeds killed or removed and soil roto-tilled. Make sure all drainage's are taken care of. The sod will need to be installed within 24 hours of delivery to be fresh and healthy. After installation you should keep the sod moist with irrigation daily for 2 weeks, but not standing in water.
Irrigation:
Irrigation is necessary for sod survival in dry regions. With the water shortages across the country, homeowners should maintain a deep, infrequent irrigation schedule. You should apply only enough water to moisten the soil to a depth of about 6" but avoid run off. After irrigation, do not add more water until you see drought symptoms. Symptoms include grass turning a dull bluish color, leaf blades rolling, and footprints that persist for an extended period of time.
Fertilization:
Fertilization is necessary to keep your sod fresh and deep green in color. You should use a fertilize mixture with a 3-1-2 ratio. 3 - nitrogen, 1 - phosphate, 2 - potash. Such a mixture could be 15-5-10. You need to apply approximately 1 pound of nitrogen per 1000 square feet per month in the growing season. The numbers in the fertilize mixture represent the pounds of a nutrient. For example the 15 of nitrogen in the above mixture means the is 15 pounds of nitrogen in 100 pounds of fertilize mixture. So for the mixture above you will need to apply approximately 7 pounds per 1000 square feet.
Mowing:
Mowing is an extremely important of any turf maintenance program. Every grass has its optimal mowing height. For hybrid bermuda sod the optimal height should be 1 inch. The mowing frequency depends on the speed of which the grass is growing. The best rule to follow is "Never Mow More Than 1/3 Of The Leaf Blade Off At Any One Time". You should always keeps your mower blades sharp. Sharp Blades makes a smoother, cleaner cut that is more visually appealing to the eye and protect the grass from damage.
We hope the above lawn care tips will make you yard look just like your neighbors so you can enjoy it more.
